What is Bingsu?

Bingsu, also known as patbingsu, is a popular Korean shaved ice dessert that has a rich history dating back several centuries. The origins of bingsu can be traced back to the Joseon Dynasty in Korea (1392-1910), where it was primarily consumed by the royal court and the nobility as a special treat during the hot summer months.

Originally, bingsu was a simpler version made with just shaved ice and sweetened red bean paste, known as pat. This traditional style of bingsu, called patbingsu, remained popular for many years and is still enjoyed today. The shaved ice was typically hand-shaved using a large block of ice and then topped with a generous amount of sweetened red bean paste.

Over time, bingsu evolved and began incorporating various other ingredients and flavors. In the 20th century, the introduction of new ingredients such as fruits, rice cakes, ice cream, and condensed milk transformed bingsu into a more diverse and elaborate dessert. Fruits like strawberries, mangoes, and melons became popular toppings, adding a refreshing and colorful touch to the dessert.

In the 1990s, bingsu experienced a surge in popularity as it became widely available in cafes and dessert shops across South Korea. The dessert's versatility and ability to adapt to different flavors and toppings made it a hit among locals and tourists alike. Bingsu quickly became an iconic summer dessert, offering a delightful way to beat the heat and enjoy a sweet treat.

Today, bingsu continues to be a beloved dessert in South Korea and has gained international recognition. It has also evolved further with new and creative flavors, such as green tea, chocolate, coffee, and even savory options like cheese or matcha. Bingsu has become an important part of Korean culinary culture, and its popularity has spread to various parts of the world, where it is often enjoyed as a refreshing and delicious dessert option.

If you're a fan of candles, you know that they can bring a cozy, warm atmosphere to any room. But in order to get the most out of your candle, it's important to properly care for it. Here are a few tips for keeping your candle burning bright:

-Trim the wick: Before lighting your candle, be sure to trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. This will help prevent the flame from becoming too large and will ensure that your candle burns evenly.

-Burn for at least an hour: The first time you light your candle, be sure to burn it for at least an hour. This will allow the wax to melt all the way to the edge of the jar, which will prevent tunnelling (when the wax only melts down the center of the candle).

-Keep the wax pool clear: As your candle burns, be sure to keep the wax pool clear of any debris, such as wick trimmings or matches. This will help the candle burn smoothly and will prevent the flame from becoming obstructed.

-Don't burn for too long: While it's important to burn your candle for at least an hour at a time, you don't want to burn it for too long. A good rule of thumb is to burn your candle for no more than 4 hours at a time. This will help prevent the wax from overheating and will extend the life of your candle.

-Store properly: When you're not using your candle, be sure to store it in a cool, dry place. This will help prevent the wax from melting and will keep your candle in good condition.

By following these tips, you can enjoy your candle for longer and create a warm, inviting atmosphere in your home. Happy candle burning!
